Grammar checker

Find grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes, read a short explanation for each one, and fix them one by one or all at once with a click.

The grammar checker finds grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes in your text, explains each one in plain words, and fixes it with one click. It does not change sentences that are already correct, your meaning, your voice, names or quotes.

Open Grammar checker in the sidebar.

Check your text

  1. Paste or type your text into the box. You can also click Upload PDF, Word or text or From a link. See Importing files and links.
  2. Under English spelling, choose American (color) or British (colour).
  3. Optionally tick Suggest clearer wording (see below).
  4. Click Check my text.

The text box is locked while it is checked, so the fixes line up with your text. Long texts are checked in parts of about 4,500 characters, and you see "Checking part 2 of 4". Click Stop to end early. Mistakes found so far are still shown.

Note

The grammar checker works on plain text. Headings, bold and links from a file or a page are read as plain text, and the result you copy is plain text too.

Review the suggestions

The result shows your text with each mistake underlined, plus a card for each one.

  • The top line says how many suggestions there are, with a count per type, like "2 Spelling" and "1 Punctuation".
  • Click an underlined word in the text to jump to its card.
  • Each card shows the type, the mistake crossed out, the fix, and a short explanation you can learn from.

For each card:

  • Accept puts the fix into your text.
  • Ignore removes the suggestion and leaves your text as it is.

Click Accept all to apply every remaining suggestion at once. When nothing is left, you see All fixed (or No mistakes found if there were none). Click Copy text to copy your corrected text.

Types of suggestions

TypeWhat it covers
GrammarVerb forms, agreement, word order, wrong words like "their is"
SpellingTypos and misspellings, in the American or British spelling you chose
PunctuationMissing apostrophes, commas, full stops and similar
Word choiceA word that is used wrongly or does not fit
ClarityUnclear or wordy phrasing (only with Suggest clearer wording)

Suggest clearer wording

Mistakes are always checked. With Suggest clearer wording ticked, the checker also suggests clearer or shorter wording where a sentence is hard to read. These show as Clarity suggestions. They are only suggestions: ignore the ones that change your voice.

Edit after checking

If you change the text in the box after a check, the suggestions are cleared, because they no longer match. Click Check my text again.

Limits

  • At least 2 words.
  • Up to 60 suggestions per part of about 4,500 characters.
  • Checks count toward your monthly AI words (a small amount per check). See Plans and limits.
  • Grammar checks are not saved. Copy your corrected text before you leave the page.

Tips

  • Read each explanation. It is the quickest way to stop making the same mistake.
  • Check the fix in context. The checker is AI, so now and then a suggestion may not fit what you meant. Ignore it.
  • Other languages: you can check text in other languages too. The American or British choice only affects English spelling.
  • Then check the style. For an essay, run it through the Essay grader for feedback beyond grammar.

Troubleshooting

"Add some text to check" The box is empty or has only one word.

"The checker did not answer properly. Try again." Click Check my text again. For a very long text, try a shorter part.

A mistake was not found No checker finds everything. Read your text aloud once more, and check names and technical terms yourself.
