Connect Claude Code

Add SerpPal to Claude Code with one terminal command and your API key, check that it works, choose where the setting is saved, and fix common connection errors.

Claude Code connects to SerpPal's MCP server over HTTP with one command. After that, you can ask Claude in your terminal to read, improve and publish your SerpPal articles.

Before you start

  • Install Claude Code and sign in.
  • Make an API key on your SerpPal Account page (see API keys).

Add SerpPal

  1. On your Account page, under Connect an AI assistant, open the Claude Code tab and click Copy. Right after you make a key, the command already includes it.
  2. Paste it in your terminal and press Enter. It looks like this:
bash
claude mcp add --transport http serppal https://serppal.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer sp_live_YOUR_KEY"

If you copied the command later, replace YOUR_KEY with your key. Keep the word Bearer and the space after it.

Use it in every folder

By default, Claude Code saves the server for the folder you are in (the "local" scope), so it is only available when you start Claude there. To use SerpPal everywhere, add --scope user:

bash
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user serppal https://serppal.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer sp_live_YOUR_KEY"
Important

Avoid --scope project. It writes the server, including your key, to a .mcp.json file in the project, which is easy to commit and share by mistake.

Check that it works

  • Run claude mcp list in your terminal. serppal should be listed as connected.
  • Or, inside Claude Code, type /mcp to see the servers and their tools.
  • Then ask: "List my SerpPal projects." Claude asks your permission to use the list_projects tool, then shows your projects.

Use it

Ask in plain words. For example:

  • "Read my SerpPal article on cold brew coffee and raise its score above 75."
  • "Analyze 'pour over coffee ratio' in my Coffee Corner project and draft the article when the analysis is done."
  • "Schedule the French press article on my blog for tomorrow at 9:00 my time."

More ideas are in What is MCP. Every tool is described in the Tools reference.

Tip

Claude Code asks before each tool call. You can allow read-only tools (like get_article) for the session, but keep approving publish_article yourself.

Change or remove the key

To change the key, remove the server and add it again with the new key:

bash
claude mcp remove serppal
claude mcp add --transport http serppal https://serppal.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer sp_live_NEW_KEY"

If you added it with --scope user, add --scope user to both commands.

Troubleshooting

"Missing API key. Send Authorization: Bearer <your SerpPal API key>." The --header part is missing or misspelled. Remove the server and add it again with the full command.

"Invalid or revoked API key. Make a new one on the SerpPal Account page." The key was revoked or mistyped (for example cut short when copying). Make a new key and add the server again.

"Too many requests: up to 120 calls a minute per key..." Claude made a lot of calls very quickly. Wait the number of seconds shown and continue. See Security and limits.

The server shows as failed in claude mcp list. Check the address: it must end in /mcp and start with https://. Check your internet connection or company proxy.

A tool says "... Check the id, or that this account can open it." The project, article or post isn't in your account, or you were removed from that project. Ask Claude to list your projects or articles again to get the right ids.
