Import and export
Bring an existing page, HTML or Markdown into the editor to score it, and export your article as HTML, Markdown, Word, plain text or schema markup.
You can load an article you already have into the editor to score and improve it, and take your finished article out in the format you need.
Import an article
Click the Import button (folder icon) in the editor header. The Import a page box has three modes.
Importing replaces the text in the editor. You can press Ctrl + Z right after to undo it. If you want to keep the current text safe, click Save first so it is kept as a version.
From URL
Loads the article from a live page.
- Choose From URL.
- Enter the Page address. It is filled in with the article's target URL when you have set one.
- Leave Also use its title and meta description ticked to copy the page's title and meta description into the Title and Meta fields. Untick it to keep yours. Empty fields are filled either way.
- Click Import. You see how many words were imported.
SerpPal finds the main article on the page and leaves out menus, sidebars, footers and scripts. Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links and images are kept.
Paste HTML
Paste HTML from your CMS or another editor. Scripts, styles, forms, embeds and all attributes except link addresses and image sources and alt text are removed, so you get clean content. Only https:// and http:// links and images are kept.
Paste Markdown
Paste Markdown from a writing app, a doc or an AI chat. SerpPal converts:
#,##and###headings (deeper levels become Heading 3);- paragraphs, bold, italic and inline code;
- bulleted and numbered lists;
- tables;
- quotes, code blocks and horizontal rules;
- links and images with
https://orhttp://addresses.
The Also use its title and meta description option is only for URLs.
Audit a live page
When you choose Audit a page on the dashboard and enter Your published page, the editor imports that page automatically the first time you open it, with its title and description. You can then see how it scores and improve it. See The dashboard.
Import problems
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Could not open that page (HTTP 403). Some sites block automated visits." | The site refused the visit, or the page needs a login. Copy the HTML or text from your browser and use Paste HTML instead. |
| "Could not find an article on that page" | Fewer than 30 words of article text were found, for example on a page built only with scripts. Paste the content instead. |
| An address error | Use a full public address starting with https://. Private and local addresses cannot be imported. |
Export your article
Click the Export button (download icon) in the header and choose:
| Option | What you get |
|---|---|
| Copy HTML | The article body as clean HTML, ready to paste into a CMS HTML view |
| Copy plain text | The text without formatting, with blank lines between blocks |
| Download .html | A complete web page file with your title as the page title and your meta description |
| Download .md | Markdown, with your title as a # heading at the top |
| Download Word (.doc) | A file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, with your title as the heading |
| Download .txt | Your title, then the plain text |
| Copy schema markup (Article + FAQ) | JSON-LD structured data to paste into the page head |
Downloaded files are named after your keyword, for example best-vpn-for-gaming.md.
The Markdown, Word and text exports put your Title at the top. If your article also starts with an H1, you will see the title twice. Remove one of them, depending on how your site adds the title.
Schema markup
Copy schema markup (Article + FAQ) builds structured data from your article:
- An Article block with your title as the headline (up to 110 characters), your meta description, today's date as the date modified, and your target URL when you have set one (More, then Target URL).
- An FAQPage block when your article has question headings: every H2 or H3 that ends with a question mark and has text under it becomes a question, with that text as the answer.
Paste it into the <head> of the published page, or into your SEO plugin's custom schema field. You can check it with Google's Rich Results Test.
Copy problems
If you see "Could not copy. Your browser blocked the clipboard.", allow clipboard access for SerpPal in your browser settings, or use a download option instead.
Publish directly
Instead of exporting and pasting, you can send the article straight to WordPress, Shopify, Ghost, Webflow or a webhook with the Publish button. See Publish and schedule.
Common questions
Are images uploaded when I import? No. Images keep their original web address. If you publish to another site, make sure those images are still available, or add your own.
Does importing count as an analysis? No. Importing only loads text. It does not use your analyses or AI words.
Can I export comments or versions? No. Exports contain the article only.
