Comments
Leave feedback on an article for your team: comment on selected text, jump to the quoted passage, and resolve, reopen or delete comments.
Comments let you and your team discuss an article right where it is written. A writer can ask a question, an editor can leave feedback on a sentence, and a client with view-only access can approve or request changes, all without editing the text.
Who can comment
Everyone who can open the article can comment: the project owner, Editors and Viewers. Comments are shared with everyone in the project. To invite people, see Team members.
Open the comments
Click the Comments button (speech bubble) in the editor header. A badge on the button shows how many comments are still open. It disappears when every comment is resolved.
Comment on a passage
The best comments point at the exact text they are about.
- Select the text in the article.
- Click Comment in the menu that appears over your selection.
- The comments box opens with your selection quoted at the top.
- Write your comment and click Comment.
To comment on the article as a whole, remove the quote with the x next to it, or open the comments from the header without selecting anything.
Comments can be up to 2,000 characters. The quoted text keeps the first 400 characters of your selection.
Read and jump to the text
Each comment shows who wrote it, how long ago, the quoted text (if any) and the comment itself. Click the quoted text to close the box and jump to that passage in the article. It is selected so you can see it right away.
If the text has been changed since, you see "That text is no longer in the article".
Resolve, reopen and delete
- Resolve: marks the comment as done and hides it from the list. Anyone who can comment can resolve.
- Show resolved: tick it at the top of the box to see resolved comments too.
- Reopen: brings a resolved comment back.
- Delete: removes a comment for good. You can always delete your own comments. The project owner and Editors can also delete other people's comments.
Good habits
- Quote the exact sentence. "This claim needs a source" is much clearer when it points at the claim.
- Resolve comments once they are handled, so the badge shows only what is left.
- Use the article status (To do, Writing, Review, Done) together with comments, so everyone knows whose turn it is.
- For outside reviewers who do not need an account, share a read-only link instead. People with the link can read but cannot comment.
Common questions
Do people get an email when I comment? No. Comments only appear in the editor, with the count on the Comments button. Let your teammate know when you leave feedback.
Can I edit a comment? No. Delete it and write a new one.
What happens to comments when an article is deleted? They are deleted with it.
Can Viewers comment? Yes. Viewers can read, check the score and comment, but they cannot change the article. They can comment on selected text too: the selection menu shows Comment for them.
